Thoughts: The term “cult classic” gets thrown around a lot; often times for movies that really don’t deserve it.  In my mind, a movie needs to be a little weird or crazy and have a following that just doesn’t really fall in line with the status quo.  Killer Klowns is one movie that definitely belongs in the category of Cult Classic.

The design of the movie is pretty brilliant.  The clowns are something that will give you nightmares and are likely responsible for many cases of Coulrophobia (fear of clowns – don’t say you never learned anything from reading my blog).  Their weapons are equally as impressive with caustic cotton candy and popcorn guns.  The kills all revolve around pranks and typical circus tricks.

The cast is secondary to the clowns, but they do an adequate job. The rank is filled with unknowns, and most wouldn’t go on to do much in Hollywood.  The most memorable face has to be John Vernon, who plays Dead Wormer in Animal House.  He does a superb job playing the police officer that is out to get pretty much everyone around him.

While Stephen Chiodo is credited with directing Killer Klowns, it is really a product of all the Chiodo Brothers; Stephen, Charles and Edward. They have done a lot in the SFX world, but to this day, this remains their lone movie.  There is a lot of buzz about a sequel; The return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space, but it doesn’t look like the movie has been made quite yet.

I’m not in love with Killer Klowns like some other people, but I do find it to be a lot of fun.  It’s a great example of 80’s insanity and is a movie best enjoyed with friends and a few beverages.
