Dead Snow (2009)
{Død snø}

Directed By: Tommy Wirkola

Starring: Charlotte Frogner, Vegor Hoel, Jeppe Laursen, Evy Kasseth, Jenny Skavlam, Ane Dahl Torp

Subgenre: Zombies

Dead Snow

Synopsis: A group of college kids head to a remote cabin in the mountains for a weekend of partying only to stumble upon a ravenous group of Nazi zombies.

Thoughts: What can be cooler than zombies? Nazi Zombies, that’s what, especially when done right.  Dead Snow doesn’t reinvent the genre and even relies on some very tired story tenants, such as a group of college kids heading to a remote cabin to get away for the weekend and the curse that brings the zombies back to life.  Dead Snow is an entertaining mix of horror and humor, with some pretty damn good effects to boot.

In case the cast list above didn’t give it away, Dead Snow is a Norwegian flick, so yes, there are subtitles.  If you are still avoiding foreign movies because of subtitle, you are missing out on some great movies.  Tommy Wirkola looked to have a good time directing this, making ample use of the snowy landscape by splashing blood everywhere.  I’ve always thought that blood on snow was an amazing visual when used properly.  I’m looking forward to Wirkola’s future flicks.  He has two in production now that look interesting to say the least; Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (starring Jeremy Renner and Famke Jansen) and Kurt Josef Wagle and the Legend of the Fjord Witch.

The cast the usual suspects for a horror movie including attractive girls, the athletic guy and the funny guy, who just happens to quote movies.  The real strength of the cast is the zombies of course.  The effects were really well done and I have to believe these are some of the best looking Nazi zombies on film. To top it off, there are some great death scenes throughout, including disembowelments and victims being ripped apart.  There is one fight scene in particular that makes some great use of zombie intestines.

Even though zombies are everywhere these days, even in the news, I suggest checking this out if you haven’t.  It’s not scary, but it isn’t meant to be.  It’s a bloody good time with very good effects work.  Sit back and enjoy!
