Stake Land (2010)

Directed By: Jim Mickle

Starring: Connor Paolo, Nick Damici, Kelly McGillis, Michael Cerveris, Danielle Harris, Bonnie Dennison, Sean Nelson

Subgenre: Vampires, Post-Apocalyptic

Synopsis: Martin finds himself under the protection of Mister, a vampire slayer just looking to survive in a post-apocalyptic America.

Thoughts: When I first heard of Stake Land, someone said it was a lot like Zombie Land.  Now, I know they are both post-apocalyptic movies with similar names, but that is where the similarities end.  Zombie Land is funny, really funny.  Stake Land is a dark, bleak look at a future populated by feral vampires and worse.

There is a lot to like about Stake Land.  I loved the look of it.  It really reminded me of the Mad Max movies or Fallout.  People scavenged whatever they could and huddled together for safety at night.  The actors were good as well, with both Damici and Cerveris standing out as Mister and Jebedia.  I also thought Jim Mickle’s direction was noteworthy, at least enough so to have me on the lookout for Mulberry Street.  I look forward to seeing what else he brings us.

Now, the movie wasn’t perfect, at least in my eyes.  I wasn’t a huge fan of the way the story with Jebedia played out, specifically the ending.  I don’t want to say too much, but I thought it was a little much and thought it would have been better left where it was.

Stake Land is another movie that I highly recommend, and is quite honestly one of my favorite movies to see this year.  I am not usually one to make lists, but I have a feeling if I was, this would be on it.
